Heartbreaking things from the Coco Junior Novelization that I haven’t seen mentioned here yet:

-Coco doesn’t really remember Hector’s face, but she remembers his voice and how he made her feel loved and joyful

-Julio was buried in shoes that Coco made and shined with love

-Hector had never gotten as far as the Flower Bridge before; he was excited and thought he would make it

-Whenever Coco secretly dances, she doesn’t need real music, she remembers her father singing

-Hector actually considered splitting up his bones into separate people’s bags to sneak through security; his only worry was that they would go different places and he’d never be reassembled

-Miguel has met Hector for literally 30 seconds and he thinks he’s falling apart physically and emotionally

-Miguel’s excuse as to why he pulled Hector’s arm off when he was running away from the train station was ‘I’m wanted by the authorities’ and Hector’s response is ‘Oh, that’s legit, me too’ and JUST LET’S IT GO???

-Hector has dimples

-When Hector tells Miguel to quit walking like him, Miguel laughs at him for being so “sensitive” (??? What the fuck, Miguel)

-Miguel also laughs when the musicians make fun of Hector for ‘choking on chorizo’

-Hector tries very hard to persuade Miguel that family is more important than anything and when he follows his heart, it leads to them. Miguel says “then why are you alone?”

-Hector asks what makes “de la Cruz’s music” so great and Miguel says that it’s because his music gets Miguel even though he’s never met him (fishing for compliments Hector? Can’t blame you)

-Miguel is nervous Ernesto won’t like him and Hector says ‘of course he will, you’re cool and interesting and fun and talented’ and that Ernesto is going to love him

-Hector’s reaction to Miguel wanting to play Remember Me is a lot more subdued; he just clamps on the strings and says “No, not that one. No.” Then goes on to say that it’s been “butchered enough for a lifetime” ;-;

-Coco’s like ‘I’m gonna hum to the babies and no one can do anything about it’

-Every time Hector sings, he tries to put all his love into it and send it across the Bridge so Coco can feel it, if only in her dreams

-Miguel thinks his and Hector’s voices fit like a puzzle together

-When it takes Ernesto a minute to recognize Hector, Hector feels ashamed of being so shabby

-Hector was just as happy performing his songs as he was to sing by himself–he just loved music

-When Hector was leaving Ernesto, he was worried he would lose him as a friend and was relieved when they drank together

-Ernesto and Hector joked and laughed on their way to the train station and Hector felt like it was old times

-Hector is even more cracked and raggedy after he gets roughed up by Ernesto’s guards

-Miguel compares Ernesto and Hector in his mind and realizes Ernesto gave him advice about fame; Hector taught him how to sing from the heart

-They trade gritos back and forth for longer in the pit, after saying they’re proud to be family, but they stop because Hector is too exhausted and out of breath

-Hector’s new boots were specifically made by Imelda

-When the dead Rivera’s cross the bridge, Hector can’t help but start singing, Coco dances, and Imelda does both
