I’m late to the screencap redraw wagon, but I wanted to try one and then I COULDN’T STOP. Hector has the GREATEST FACE and I’m absolute Trash for drawing characters who are all arms and legs. And this was a surprisingly good exercise—I’ve gotten complacent in my anatomy, and working off an active 3D model made me think about things I’ve forgotten about, like how the pelvis is a bowl, not just a horizontal line. After a while I realized I was getting really excited about studying the pelvis of an imaginary Pixar skeleton but honestly given the nature of Tumblr I’m pretty sure that’s one of least weird things to find oneself doing.

Incidentally the last two images on the first set are some of my favorite reactions in character development, seeing Hector respond to the distortion of his music. I love that self-conscious look he gives around backstage when Miguel says he wants to sing “Remember Me,” and then the nervous habit of mindlessly tuning the guitar.

I’m gonna have to do more of these.

Last set of redraws for a little while! Between falling down this Coco rabbit hole and celebrating the reveal of the last Queen’s Thief book cover, this has been a really fun week. For the past four years, my energy has been so focused on my own novels that I haven’t had a chance to dive deep into any particular fandom, and there’s nothing like getting really excited with a bunch of other creative minds about one masterpiece or another. I’m not done making Coco art, but posts will be coming more slowly now. I have some great client projects I’ll be focusing on in August, and of course another manuscript to draft. Soon (hopefully soon, once the legalese is finalized) I’ll be able to share some exciting news about the Creatures of Light universe! ❤

I alllmost posted these yesterday and then made myself wait, so I could space out my posts like a h*cking adult.

Actually this drawing kick has been great, because it’s forced me to slow down on my current manuscript. I sent the first installment to betas last week and told myself I was going to wait to start book 2 to let my thoughts settle… and made it a whole six days before I started writing again. I got four chapters written before this Coco streak kicked in. So while I’m sure my agent and editor are staring bewildered at this weird tangential side street I’m rampaging through, it’s keeping me from rushing into drafting.
