Despite having a life expectancy of 150 years old, Jonathan the Tortoise has exceeded all expectations and is currently predicted to be the oldest living land animal in the world.
A study of the above photograph, which shows Jonathan with a prisoner of the Boer War in 1902, has revealed that he was at least around 50 years old at the time it was taken. Therefore, with his birth year believed to be in the early 1830s, his estimated age is placed at around 183 years old. To put this into perspective, Jonathan has lived through the leaderships of 38 US presidents and 54 British prime ministers.
Despite his failing eyesight and sense of smell, he still has keen hearing abilities and a healthy appetite. He feeds on the grass in his enclosure every day and is fed a large meal of carrots, lettuce, beans and apples once a week.
