Time for another one of my Nintendo Wishes. Not a game this time, but a direction I want for a certain character.

I want Ridley to show his intelligence better.

Something has always bothered me about Ridley. He is the commander of the Space Pirates, He organized the raid on ceres space station. He allegedly built his own robot duplicate in Metroid Zero Mission. And several of his trophies in the Super Smash Bros series imply that he’s actually a very intelligent being. He’s allegedly capable of speech and has a sadistic sense of humor.

But every moment he’s on screen in the Metroid games he’s screaming and firing lasers and using his brute strength and nothing more. The only exception I can think of is that brief intro scene in Zero Mission where he’s calmly perched in his ship, waiting to land on Zebes.

I’m not saying Ridley should suddenly start a monologue before a battle, at most, maybe show him issuing commands to lower space pirates in his dragon chatter, show him operating computers and machinery, at the very least, show some more emotion in his face, or signs that he’s a thinking, calculating creature.
